Caravaggio's painting in Malta

The exhibition at the Scuderie Del Quirinale in Rome, marks the 400th anniversary of the celebrated Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi, alias Caravaggio. All the works that are presented in this exhibition (being held between 20 February - 13 June 2010 ) have been carefully selected focusing exclusively on the artist's "capital" works, mainly those works historically known to be by the master's own hand. The only painting missing from this exhibition is the Beheading of St John which is the only signed painting by Caravaggio.

The Beheading of St John (1608) is found in the conventual church of the Order of the Knights Hospitallier of St John, known as the Knights of Malta. This painting is considered to be one of Caravaggio's main masterpieces and is unique because of the signature painted from the gushing blood of the Saint's head. The huge canvas is displayed in the Oratory for which it was commissioned.

Restored in the late 1990's in Florence, this painting is one of Caravaggio's most impressive uses of the chiaroscuro style for which he is most famous for. A circle of light illuminates the scene of St John's beheading at the request of Salome. It is also the largest canvas that he ever painted. The oratory also houses Caravaggio's St Jerome (1607–1608). Both masterpieces are on permanent exhibition.

The experience of viewing this painting in situ is quite unique. St John's co-Cathedral is a magnificent church which is undergoing extensive restoration. This is the place where Caravaggio spent his time in Malta after fleeing Rome in 1607.

His freedom lasted just over a year. He was later imprisoned in Fort St Angelo, from where he later escaped to Sicily.

Hidden Valletta - the old quarters

A great moment in any trip is stumbling upon that little-known shop, pub, or restaurant. Valletta offers all that and more. This small underrated European city holds secret places as yet untapped by mass tourism - quarters filled with character and authenticity, where it’s easy to slip in, slow down, and live like a local. Valletta is still an affordable city worlds away from the madding crowd.

At some point, most visitors to Valletta pass through Strait Street, the terribly quaint narrow street which cuts through the whole of the city. Few know that this cobbled narrow street was once the red light district. Remnants of that bygone era are the many shop signs that still hang on the abbandond bars and night clubs. 'The Queen of Egypt' or the 'Smiling Prince' just to name a few. Even though bohemian Valletta was long ago chased out of this area, there is still one small wine bar which you can still walk into and get a feeling of the kind of charm that is still alive. Trabixu is worth a visit, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the bohemian crowd that frequents this place. But just a few hundred feet downhill, and a left turning and you will find yourself in Old Bakery street. Here you will find some of the best restaurants that will entice your appitite with local cuisine. Rubino is one of the best for Maltese rabbit and Capistrano just a few paces away offers a different recepie for the same dish. If you prefer fish, then Fumia is the place to go for dinner. Housed underneath Manuel Theatre it is very popular for the fresh catch which is served every day.
Piazza Regina is one of the nicest squares in the centre of the city. There are plenty of coffee shops to choose from, however Cafe Cordina remains the city's nucleus, surrounded by Palaces and the Old Grandmaster's Library. Cafe Cordina has up to this day retained its cultured elite crowd. The spirit of the area that once served the Maltese Nobility with the best teas and coffee brought by the merchants just down the road, hasn’t completely died. Prim old ladies, layers and the young businessmen gather in this place for the best coffee in town.

Eat
Round the corner from the touristy cafés you will cross Old Theatre street. There you will find café Palazz, with a nontraditional menu and a good selection of Sicilian pastry.
Malata - offers some of the nicest dishes in one of the newly restored squares - Palace Square. Malata dishes up some of Malta's best fruits de mer . The seemingly humble Rubino Confectionary which still retains its 1900's facade is still at the top of the list for Maltese cuisine.

If you feel like trying something new go to La Mere in Merchant street. This is a quiet and cosy restaurant specializing in a fusion of mediterranean, Maltese, Arabian and Indian cuisine.

See
Casa Rocca Piccola is worth a visit. It is a privately owned 18th Century palace with over 50 rooms, most are open for viewing. Take a guided tour to fully appreciate what this gem of a Palace has to offer.
Out of the 25 churches to be found in the city, St John's Co-Cathedral is a must place to see. It was built as the conventual church for the Knights of St John. Stop at the Oratory and admire the altar painting by Caravaggio, the only known painting to be signed by the artist. The Beheading of St John the Baptist was completed in 1608 and depicts the saint at the moment of his martyrdom.

The Passion of Christ, or Easter Week is one of Malta's most important celebration. It is a celebration of life itself and the whole country comes alive. The Catholic Church in Malta is passionate about Easter celebrations. Each town has its own accent on its celebrations and many of the local residents will be involved in some way. These differ from one area to another, but in common they all portray life, colour, culture, music and passion plays, all with a very religious meaning.

Everywhere, processions make their way through the village streets, carrying religious icons and symbols of the faith. In Valletta alone there are about 25 churches, that will hold some form of function related to these images. Easter week has to be experienced first hand to be fully appreciated and no words can begin to describe the emotions that you get wherever you go. If you have the opportunity to sample these festivities, one thing is sure, the images will stay with you forever.

You will find, that during these celebrations accommodation is very difficult to find, especially in Valletta. Many people resort to booking in advance.

However, many are not aware that it only takes 40 minutes by bus, from the centre, to get to the nearest beach. It is well worth thinking outside the box when choosing your holiday accommodation. The island is known for its many contrasts. It has been a trade route since the Roman Empire. Malta became famous for its honey and spices, and for many a diver's culture, a settling place. Marsaxlokk is a small fishing village. This lies to the south of the island just 25 minutes from Valletta. Many tourists admire the colourful Maltese boats with their legendary evil eye found at the helm of each fishing boat - a symbol of protection against harm.

The Upper Barracca Gardens in Valletta overlook the Grand Harbour, just like a huge panoramic balcony.

The Blue Lagoon has truly magnificent blue waters, found at the small island of Comino. Ferry boats leave across the harbour.

Gozo is the second largest island. One of its highlights is the Cittadella in Victoria - a charming town with stunning views of the whole island.

Mdina is Malta's old capital situated on one of the island's highest points. This tiny walled city dates back to the Arab rule and you can still feel the influence of Arab architecture especially in the street layouts. It is said that beneath the structure of the cathedral lies the foundations of an Arab mosque. Palazzo Falson is also located in Mdina.

The Maltese Falcon in Malta

The Maltese Falcon, the world's largest and most expensive private sailing vessel, formerly owned by Tom Perkins - the American venture capitalist, is at the moment berthed at Malta's spectacular marina inside the Grand Harbour. The Maltese Falcon, is an elegant 'hybrid' 289ft boat with three carbon-fibre 20-story masts that carry 15 sails. They can unfurl in six minutes into a total area of 25,791 sq ft, equivalent to half the pitch at Wembley.

David Pelly of Boat International magazine, a superyacht specialist, said: “It’s really a remarkable boat. It is based on the design of a German who wanted to have a modern square rig for merchant ships. Perkins wanted to try it out and had it built."

Tom Perkins, 75, sold the superyacht last summer but refrained from naming the buyer due to confidentiality. However he admitted that "It has taken a while...it is not the best of time in the world to sell it." Reportedly the superyacht was sold for £60m.

The yacht was named after the Dashiell Hammett crime novel that was published in the 1930s and its Humphrey Bogart film version. Its fabulous art deco interior pays tribute to this period with an up-to-date elegance, a glamourous feel and functionality that gives the Maltese Falcon its design edge.

Maltese Carnival

Masked revellers swarmed the streets of Valletta as the historic Maltese city launched its annual Carnival.

Good weather made this centuries-old carnival, rooted in the Christian festivities ahead of the fast of Lent, possible as the fragile paper mache floats paraded through the streets of Valletta.

The Maltese Carnival is one of the largest festivals on the island, an appreciated cocktail of tradition, entertainment, history and transgression in a unique city. A festival that attracts foreign and local spectators from around world each year.

For a city with a long history of past glories, more than any other on the continent, the capital of Malta is still excitingly forward-looking.

Valletta has managed to balance itself in a liaison between culture, commerce and good living; and has long been celebrated as the most aesthetically pleasing city in Malta. St Paul's feast on Feb 10th is one of the few feasts to be celebrated in winter. Valletta is certainly one of the most curious cities which you might come across. It is characterised by magnificent palaces and surrounded by bastions giving it a grandeur like no other place in Europe. Citta Nobile as it used to be referred to, is a city where you cannot get lost. It has a grid type of plan which by the end of your stay you would have memorized by heart. None the less you will be amazed that every time you pass through a square or a cobbled street there will be things which you would have missed. The different Auberges which the Knights of Malta built, still retain their fascination, the hidden churches and lively markets makes this city unique. With so many palazzos and piazze to discover, Valletta is a place for the late night strolls spent wandering charming traffic-free streets, when all of the bustle of the day dies down; stopping in one of the wine bars for the last glass of wine... it is truly a romantic capital which is generally underrated.

Local Knowledge:
Taxis: Use public buses. These are old but inexpensive and you get to see a lot. All buses leave from just outside the city gate in Valletta.
Tipping culture: In restaurants, service is generally included in the bills and it is up to you if you feel like giving a tip, generally depending on the service, however this is not obligatory.
Siesta and Fiesta: Business hours are fairly standard. Food shops close around 1300hrs and reopen at 1600hrs. Shops are closed on Sundays but the open markets are alive!

Carnival in Malta

This year, Carnival in Malta runs between the 12th and 16th of February 2010.

The main events takes place in Valletta and Floriana with grand defiles of floats in the streets. It is also a time were many people dress up in costumes and walk through the streets of Valletta. It is well worth planning your holiday to coincide with Malta's unique carnival event and enjoy the spontaneous spirit which is still alive today. Participation is also fee of charge. A black cape and a mask should do the trick and you can then step in a new world with no inhibitions.

Carnival in Malta dates back to the 16th Century and has been celebrated in Malta since the arrival of the Knights of St. John in 1535. Some studies indicate an earlier date - 1470.

Maltese weather this winter has been very mild with an average temperature of 18ºC; this is due to the warming effect of the surrounding sea. We have had plenty of sunny days that have made Christmas shopping easy and pleasant. Cafe Cordina vs Cafe Premier - the battle of the coffee shops

It seems that there are never enough cappuccinos and chilled confectionaries to go around and the supply of shops catering for this demand is expanding even faster. However there is one particular place in the heart of the city - Cafe Cordina which has kept its high standard and has offered tea, coffee and cakes in one of the most splendid squares in Valletta - Piazza Regina. This tea room has become an institution in itself, even more so after Cafe Priemier closed its doors a few months ago. It did not do so because it lost the war of the coffee shops, but to put it quite bluntly there is the ring of the ancient rivalry, much the same as that between Quadri's and Florian's in Venice's Piazza San Marco. The idea of an old established coffee shop conjures up images of the 17th and 18th century gentleman sitting in the shade and reading their newspaper, concluding deals for their imports and exports, just a few meters away from their shops in Merchant street. The modern coffee shop, however is less of a place for creative expression and more of a place where to sit for a quick break; none the less both Cafe Cordina and Cafe Premier must be on your visiting list.

Of the thousands of tourists who annually make their way from London, Paris, Rome, and other European cities, for their holidays, only a small portion venture to stop at the small island in the middle of the mediterranean and stray away off the beaten track to where Lord Byron found love in the arms of Mrs Spencer Smith, and Turner painted the Grand Harbour with his romantic colours.

Rubino is one of a kind. It is a small restaurant with just three rooms and four to five tables in each of these rooms. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the food excellent. The menu changes according to what is in season, however if you are visiting Malta for the first time this is the place to taste the National dish stewed rabbit. Rubino is easy to find and situated at no 53 Old Bakery street. It still has a nineteen thirties facade with the title 'confectionary' of its previous owner... so do not be mislead. It is best to make a reservation as it is a favorite place for the locals and can be difficult to find a table at times.

De Wignacourt proved so impressed at having the famous artist as official painter to the Order that he inducted him as a knight, and the early biographer Bellori records that the artist was well pleased with his success. There are some 60 events throughout the year; most of these take place during the summer months. The Maltese festa has a long established tradition and relate to religious celebrations.

Valletta with its 25 churches, which date back to the knights of Malta offers the best possible insight into the culture of these feasts in Malta. Some statues which are taken out on these special occasions, date back to the fifteenth century. Streets are decorated with brightly coloured banners and offer a festive and vibrant celebration. The grand finale of these festivities is the fireworks display which draws a huge crowd.

Hastings Gardens is the best place to spend a lazy afternoon. This is a public garden in Valletta, Malta and is located on top of the bastions West side of the City Gate. The garden offer the best views of Floriana, Sliema and Manoel Island. Here you will also find the monument in honor of Francis, Marquis of Hastings who was governor of Malta under the British rule. Marsaxlokk is the foremost fishing village and, perhaps, the most picturesque seaside locality in Malta. Fishing nets are often spread on the quay to dry in the sun and, quite often, sturdy fishermen can be seen mending these nets. These activities, together with the modest houses by the quayside, lend the place charm and serenity.
Most of Malta's fish supplies are caught by fishermen coming from this port. Swordfish, tuna, and the popular 'lampuki' are caught in abundance between spring and late autumn. On weekdays, the catch is taken to the fish-market in Valletta, but on Sundays fish is retailed by fishermen in the open on the quay.
Fish restaurants have opened to meet the ever-increasing demand. The tourist influx to Marsaxlokk has also attracted many hawkers and souvenir vendors.
The boats used by the fisherman are colourful and have the iconic 'evil' eye emblem on the sides to ward off bad spirits.

During her stay in Valletta Ms Larsen succeeded in capturing the unique rich architectural legacy of this world heritage site. Ms Larsen uses the camera as an experimental tool, often applying expired films to vintage and lomographic cameras.

Her latest exhibition in Rome entitled Bosnian Graffiti was a huge success. In this exhibition she puts her photographic eye on Bosnia and Herzegovina specifically on "streetart" of the postwar period, focusing on the wounds inflicted on the buildings, symbols of cultural genocide and the graffiti left by survivors.

Maltese Armoury exhibition in Paris

La Valette's notorious sword and dagger, plundered by Napoleon Bonaparte as war spoils, forms part of a major armoury exhibition on Maltese arms and armour in Paris at the Musée de l'Armée, also known as the Hôtel des Invalides. The exhibition entitled 'Between the Sword and the Cross' - Masterpieces from the Armoury of Malta.

The exhibition deals with the main armour of the Order of St John. Most of the exhibits on display were provided by Heritage Malta. These include seven paintings from the National Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace and the Palace Armoury, a chalice and 25 pieces from the armoury including four complete sets of armour.

There are other exhibits from France including the breast and back plates of the suit of armour of Grand Master D'Omedes and La Vallette's sword and dagger. The exhibition includes two suits of armour which had never been exhibited complete before. This has been made possible as three missing parts which are in the possession of the Royal Armoury in Leeds, England, have been taken to Paris to be assembled with the rest of the armour from the Palace Armoury.

The exhibition was set up by Heritage Malta, Michael Stroud, Curator of the Palace Armoury, Pierre Bonello, Senior Executive Exhibitions and Design, and Robert Cassar Conservator. They were assisted by staff from the Musèe des Armèe

The Hôtel des Invalides is a prestigious museum housing the third largest collection of arms in the world. It is a large complex originally built in 1670 by Louis XIV as a hospital and retirement home for wounded soldiers and war veterans. The monument now houses the Army Museum and presents military history of France from antiquity to the end of the Second World War.
the Armoury Palace of Malta. The Armoury at the Palace in Valletta, houses prestigious arms and armour dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries and is one of Europe’s most significant collections. Their presence in France and their association with the armoury collection of the Armed Forces Museum (3rd-biggest collection in the world) remain unusual, as these items have almost never left their original home of the Palace of the Grand Masters in La Vallette,
Malta’s capital. Paintings, artillery pieces and items of silver and gold ware
illustrate their history.

The exhibition is being held in one of the former refectories which is being reopened to the public after being closed for several years for restoration work to be carried out. The exhibits will be back in Malta after the 11th of January.

Siege of Malta - 1565

The Siege of Malta (also known as the Great Siege of Malta) took place in 1565 when the Ottoman Empire invaded the island, then held by the Knights Hospitaller (also known as the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, Knights of Malta, Knights of Rhodes, and Chevaliers of Malta)

The siege, one of the bloodiest and most fiercely contested in history, was won by the knights and became one of the most celebrated events of the sixteenth century. Voltaire may have exaggerated when he said, "Nothing is more well known than the siege of Malta," but it unquestionably put an end to the European perception of Ottoman invincibility and marked a new phase in Spanish domination of the Mediterranean. Nevertheless, the siege should not be viewed in isolation. Rather, it was the climax of an escalating contest between a Christian alliance and Ottoman empires for control of the Mediterranean, a contest that included a previous attack on Malta in 1551 by the Turkish corsair Turgut Reis and which in 1560 had resulted in the utter destruction of an allied Christian fleet by the Turks at the battle of Djerba.

La Valette and his Order

Universally referred to as "La Valette," he was never actually called that during his lifetime. He was simply Jean de Valette, nicknamed Parisot. He fought and successfully repulsed the Turks at the Great Siege of Malta (1565), in which the vastly outnumbered Christians held out for over 3 months against an Ottoman force containing no less than 30,000 soldiers, including the notorious Janissaries, as well as the Sultan's prized fleet of some 40 warships. The desperate battle, which saw the reduction of Fort St. Elmo, was one of immense brutality, and is regarded as one the most famous and desperate sieges of all time. As a result of the Order's victory he gained much prestige in Europe, but he declined the offer of a cardinal's hat in order to maintain independence from the papacy. This has been portrayed to his sense of modesty and his humility as a warrior monk. However, it has often been overlooked that as a Grand Master of the Order, he automatically had the same precedence as the most junior Cardinal within the Church and enjoyed a Cardinal's distinction without being involved in the internal politics of the Holy See. Even from its beginnings, the Grand Master of the Order owed allegiance only to the Pope, and to this day is recognised as the head of an Order which has diplomatic recognition with the United Nations and 100 other countries.

Maltese Lace

Maltese Lace is referred to in Maltese as 'Bizzilla'. The craft had been mastered locally by around the middle of the 17th century, but for the next 200 years it was mainly worked only by a small fraction of Gozitan women. Genoese lace makers were brought to Malta by Lady Hamilton, Lord Nelson’s consort, to help revive the industry in the early part of the 19th century. Maltese lace is a direct descendent of Genoese lace although it developed its own character, often including the Maltese Cross design.
Bobbin lace is made with various threads, each fastened to an elongated spool or bobbin. 'Ghazel' is the Maltese term used to describe the technique. A pattern is initially drawn on parchment paper. Holes are pricked to show where the pins should be placed. These pins serve to maintain the linen threads stable whilst the lace is made. The parchment is placed on a cushion throughout the whole process.

In Gozo today, you may be lucky enough to glimpse women sitting outside their front doors working lace as the Island’s women did in centuries past.

Caravaggio's Masterpiece in Valletta - at St. John's Co Cathedral

Commissioned by the Great Master of the Order of the Knights of Malta, Caravaggio's Beheading of St John was made in 1608 for the chapel of the Co-Cathedral of St John in Valletta. It is the largest work the artist ever painted (12 feet x 17 feet) and the only one he ever signed.

The painting depicts the moment in Biblical history where St John is beheaded by King Herod to satisfy the blood lust of the seductive dancer, Salome. The scene is the courtyard of a prison and the grisly murder is observed by two other prisoners looking through a grille, while a young woman and an old crone stand ready to take the severed head and put it on the waiting platter. The blood flowing from St John's neck drips towards the bottom of the frame and in its red stream, Caravaggio has signed his name.

On the oratory's right wall hangs a smaller Caravaggio painting, St Jerome, which was stolen in 1984 and rescued in a dramatic operation a few months later. In it, an elderly man sits with a pen in his hand.

Caravaggio went to Malta to avoid the death penalty that had been inflicted on him after committing a murder in Rome and, with the bloodless body of Saint John, he seems to be portraying his victim's and, at the same time, his own end. Many describe the painting as his masterwork.

Malta Rolex Middle Sea Race - History meets Racing

The Rolex Middle Sea Race is one of the oldest and toughest offshore racing Classics. Starting and finishing in Malta 's historic Marsamxett Harbour, the 606-mile race takes the fleet in an anti-clockwise direction around the Italian island of Sicily.

Co-founded by the Malta Yacht Club and the Royal Ocean Racing Club in 1968, the race features high-profile boats from the world's top designers. Normally the field consists of more than 40 experienced sailors.

A series of inshore day races precedes the main event, giving the assembled fleet the opportunity to both acclimatise to the local conditions and to enjoy the splendours of this Mediterranean island state.

The race is a true challenge to skippers and crews, who have to be at their very best to cope with the often changeable and demanding conditions. A number of other islands are used as course markers and Ted Turner has described the event as "the most beautiful race course in the world". The best place to watch the ships depart is from the Sliema Promenade in Valletta.

The Hypogeum in Malta (Maltese Neolitic Temple)

The Hypogeum in Ħal-Saflieni, Paola, Malta, is a subterranean structure excavated c. 2500 B.C. Thought to be originally a sanctuary, it became an ecropolis in prehistoric times. It is the only prehistoric underground temple in the world. The Hypogeum has a UNESCO Heritage Site listing, due to its unique structure. It was discovered by accident in 1902 when workers cutting cisterns for a new housing development broke through its roof. The workers tried to hide the temple at first, but eventually it was found.

Enrique Iglesias back for MTV concert in June

Heartthrob singer Enrique Iglesias, will be returning to Malta this June for the Isle of MTV concert to be held just outside Valletta city gate.
“Isle of MTV Malta was a fabulous event last year and I’m looking forward to sharing my music with MTV’s viewers and with Malta,” Iglesias commented.
His track Can You Hear Me? is the official song of UEFA Euro 2008, and the Spanish star is scheduled to perform live at the final in Vienna on June 29.
The 33-year-old, has had hits on every continent with songs such as Rhythm Divine, Be With You, Hero, Escape, Do You Know? and Tired of Being Sorry.

The Kooks, OneRepublic, N*E*R*D will also headline the Isle of MTV music event in Malta on 25 June, MTV Networks International (MTVNI) announced. The bands will play in the spectacular Il-Fosos Square in Floriana in front of an estimated 40,000 people.

The MTV site describes Malta as the "stunning gem of the Mediterranean" and warns that in the days leading to the concert, the whole island will be celebrating with the Malta Tourism Authority during the Malta Music Week.

Valletta - city of fountains

In 1610 Grand Master Wignacourt initiated a project to bring water to Valletta from a number of natural springs in Rabat. A system of acqueducts were built which bear his name. To celebrate the arrival of water supply system in Valletta a number of fountains were built in the city. These are located in some of the best piazzas of the city.

Valletta was built under the direction of the famous and great Italian architect, Francesco Laparelli of Cortona, who had already drawn up the first plans of the city before the Great Siege. Never before, had a completely new city been built in Europe straight from the drawing board, since before, towns had grown without any planning.

An interesting architectural feature of buildings in Valletta is the addition of niches with statues of saints prominently located at the corner of buildings. Some of these shrines were erected to commemorate a deceased relative or some other significant event in the lives of the people who lived in the area. Buildings were not allowed to jut out into the street, so as to narrow the passageway. Front gardens and gaps between houses were forbidden.

After Laparelli left Malta in 1570, his able Maltese assistant, Girolamo Cassar, continued the work. He is responsible for most of Valletta's magnificent palaces, Auberges and churches. Cassar's name, rather more than Laparelli the planner, is associated with the city. As a masterpiece of construction, Valletta became a centre of political, economic and cultural life in Europe, in which trade, handicrafts and the arts flourished.

Malta National Folk Festival

Organised by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, the National Folk Singing Festival takes place every May in the natural setting of the Argotti Botanical Gardens in Floriana, Valletta.

A mixture of Maltese and Mediterranean folk music performances are staged by local and international artists, while craftsmen display their skills at exhibitions held alongside the main event. Visitors also have the opportunity to taste traditional food and drink.

Argotti Botanical Gardens are situated just 15 minutes walk from Maison La Vallette.

Antonio Sciortino Sculptors in Valencia

Heritage Malta is putting up an exhibition consisting of 11 works in bronze and marble by the Maltese sculptor Antonio Sciortino in Valencia, Spain. The exhibition is the first one-man exhibition of Sciortino’s works overseas.

Some of Sciortino’s most noteworthy works from the national collection at the National Museum of Fine Arts are being exhibited. These include Rythmi Vitae, Surprise and Nina de Vetlina among others, and are being accompanied by a fibre-glass replica of Sciortino’s original Les Gavroches. The exhibition is co-curated by Heritage Malta’s Senior Curator for Arts and Palaces Mr Sandro Debono, Mr Dennis Vella as curator of modern and contemporary art within the Arts and Palaces Department and an authority on Antonio Sciortino, and Don Vicente Alcaraz from the Ajuntamient de Valencia.

The exhibition will be held at the Casa Museo Benlliure; a historic house built at the turn of the century and former property of the Benlliure family of artists including Jose Benlliure, a painter and former Director of the Spanish Academy in Rome and Mariano, Spain’s most important modern 19th and 20th century sculptor. The exhibition will run until May and is being held by the Ayuntamiento de Valencia, the local government of the City of Valencia, and Malta’s national agency for cultural heritage, Heritage Malta. The event will also be under the distinguished patronage of the UNESCO Valencia committee. Its director, Don Vicente Burgos has been instrumental in making this historic event happen which was also possible thanks to a collaboration agreement signed way back in 2006 between Heritage Malta and Fundacion Jaume II el Just of which Dr Burgos was then the director. This collaboration has also led to a further prestigious exhibition, this time featuring prehistoric Malta, which Heritage Malta will be putting up in Alicante later on this year at the express invitation of the MARQ museum, the winner of the 2004 European Museum of the Year Award.

Latin Jazz in Valletta

On Wednesday 16 April at 8pm, Teatru Manoel in collaboration with the German Embassy in Malta proudly presents a Latin Jazz concert entitled Vida Pura.

This ensemble, which has toured in Columbia, China and Germany, brings together the world renowned musicians Sebastian Schunke – piano (Berlin); Olvido – vocals (Cuba Berlin); Lukmil Perez – drums (Cuba Paris); Felepe Cabrera – bass (Cuba Paris); El Indio – trumpet (Cuba Berlin). Metropolitan opera star for Malta concert

The celebrated American mezzo-soprano Kate Aldrich, who has taken the world of opera by storm with her stunning performances at the Metropolitan Opera House and other prestigious venues, will be the guest artiste in a concert organised by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra at the Manoel Theatre on April 22.

The repertoire will include well known arias from Carmen, La Favorita, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Damnation de Faust, La Clemenza di Tito, Werther and La Cenerentola.

The relatively young mezzo soprano created a sensation when she appeared as Amneris in Franco Zeffirelli's production of Verdi's Aida on the commemoration of the centennial of the composer's death in 2001 in Busseto, Italy. This production was seen on RAI television and later released on DVD. Her other DVD releases include a concert with Roberto Alagna & Friends, Massenet's Werther and Don Quichotte, Strauss's Salome and Benvenuto Cellini by Berlioz.

Ms Aldrich made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Maddalena in Rigoletto. She has also appeared as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Dusseldorf, and Meg Page in Falstaff. She arrives in Malta after singing the role of Elizabeth in Donizetti's Maria Stuarda in San Diego, California and Lucrezia Borgia, at the Teatro Regio, Turin, Italy.

For a relaxing day, enjoy a visit to Birgu which is just a short distance from Valletta. The old city is situated just across the Grand Harbour. The best views of the city is from the Upper Barrakka where you can admire the massive Fort St Angelo which today houses the headquarters of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta - the Order of the Knights of St. John. It was from here that the great Master Caravaggio escaped to Naples after his short-lived adventure in Malta.

If you time your visit on Sunday morning you may try your luck at the antiques flea market. Here you will find all sorts of war time memorabilia, old coins, stamps, books and much more. The market starts as early as 7.00am and finishes at noon. Should you plan your visit during the week, the best day is a tuesday for the weekly flea market where you will find anything from fruit and vegetables, herbs and spices, clothes and other interesting bric-a-brac! And you can also haggle for the price....

Birgu is 15 minutes by bus from Valletta. You can also cross over on one of the small Maltese harbour gondolas from the Valletta waterfront just 5 minutes away.

Valletta and the European Film Festival

Audiences are in for a treat at this year's European Film Festival.

Film has long been the medium of the people - a form of entertainment that breaks the barriers of class, social status, gender, race or religion to bridge society's gaps and bring us closer together. And it's for that very reason that the local EU Representation Office has decided to continue its annual European Film Festival for the 10th year running, launching on April 12. The festival is working in conjunction with the St James Cavalier as the centre was appointed as the national coordinating body for the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.

"This year the whole of the EU is celebrating intercultural dialogue and we thought that we would use our flagship cultural activity, this film festival, to hone in on those ideologies and celebrate them through film," explained Joanna Drake, the office's head of representation.

"There are no ticket prices for the viewings but we do encourage people to book and ask them to give a donation of €3 at the door. This year funds raised will be going to The Daniel Delicata Memorial Association whose mission is the purchase, donation and/or implementation of items and services of entertainment, activity and comfort of sick children."

Calleja to pay tribute to Pavarotti

Malta's favourite opera star, Joseph Calleja, will return to a local stage at an as yet unestablished venue on July 12 paying tribute to his late hero, Luciano Pavarotti.

Accompanied by his soprano wife Tatiana Lisnic, baritone George Petean, conductor Brian Schembri and a philharmonic orchestra from Sofia, Calleja will lay special emphasis on Puccini since 2008 is the 150th anniversary of his birth.

"Joseph Calleja is one of the biggest stars in the world of classical music and this concert is bound to be one of this year's cultural highlights. Organising a concert of this magnitude requires a great deal of planning, organisation and resources.

Valletta Barrakka Gardens

Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens offer panoramic views of the Grand Harbour in Valletta.
The Upper Barrakka is however more centered and at a much higher level giving the best viewing point of Fort St Angelo just across, which is the present seat of the Knights of St John. This upper garden was in fact the gift of an eighteenth-century knight. The Anglican Garrison Church partly intrudes upon its view.The garden is built on top of a demi-bastion.
The Lower Barrakka Gardens are part of St Christopher's Bastion and also command a view of the Grand Harbour. At the centre of this garden is a small Greek-style folly built in memory of Governor Sir Alexander Ball, who led the siege against the French in 1800 and subsequently became Britain's first civil commissioner of Malta. The French during the 1798-1800 siege cultivated these gardens.

George Cross Medal re-enactment in Valletta

On the 15th April, at 18.00hrs, St George’s Square, or as it is more popularly known, Palace Square in Valletta, will be transported back in time by 66 years through a faithful re-enactment of the awarding of the George Cross Medal to the people of Malta.

“To honour the brave people I award the George Cross to the Island Fortress of Malta to bear witness to a heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history”

This citation, originally issued by King George VI on the 15th April 1942, will ring across the square once again and is sure to send a tingle down the spines of those present, making us stand justifiably proud as a Nation.

The George Cross is the highest British medal, which can be awarded to civilians for acts of bravery. Malta is the only country to ever receive this award as a Nation, in recognition of the stoicism, true grit and will of the people, which was instrumental in helping our country pull through a horrific, incessant blitz during WWII.

A delegation from the Royal Society of St George hailing from the UK will be attending the re-enactment, which will involve both the Armed Forces of Malta and the Maltese Police Force, amongst others.

The Maltese public is invited to join in this re-enactment celebrating those who lived through terrible times and came through it with honour, pride and head held high.

Valletta Fireworks Festival

The Floriana Local Council, Malta is organizing the Second Malta Festival of Mechanised Ground Fireworks (locally known as "Nar ta' l-Art") which will be held in Saint Publius Square on Saturday, 5 April 2008, on the eve of the feast of St Publius, Patron Saint of Malta and particular Patron Saint of Floriana. Ground fireworks are a unique Maltese pyrotechnic tradition, and since the festival will be held on the eve of Floriana's Parish Feast, those who attend the festival will also get a taste of the lavish local festivities which are a hallmark of Maltese Festas. Holy Week in Valletta and Birgu (Vittoriosa)

Holy Week in Malta takes place during the week before Easter and has held an important place in Malta's calender for centuries.
The cult of Christ Passion and Resurrection from Lent to Pentecost. This is very similar to procession held in Spain and particularly Seville. Many churches have movable floats depicting images of Christ, the Virgin or scenes of the Passion. Some date back to the Knights of Malta and have been commission from artists in Spain, due to the fact that the Order of St John had the Spanish Language as one of its members in the order.

The celebrations make an impressive spectacle that is both a 'festa' and a time of religious devotion. Churches as decorated with flowers and damask wall coverings. In Valletta, as well as in other localities, especially Birgu and the Cottonera area you will find exhibitions of miniature statues. Last Supper displays also attract thousands of visitors, both local and foreign. The 'Table' display dates back 200 years. Plates are arranged in a very artistic manner. Religious subjects from renowned works of art which are then reproduced with fine mineral salt, rice and pasta.

The culmination of these activities is Easter Sunday. A procession with a statue of the risen christ moves around the streets close to the church. At the end, the way is cleared and the statue-bearers take a run to carry the Risen Christ triumphantly back into the church.

Easter day is traditionally celebrated with eating of 'Figolla' which is an almond-filled pastry, covered in icing. These come in all shapes and forms!

Maltese Cross

The Maltese cross is today synonymous with Malta. Its origins go back to the 11th century when some merchants from Amalfi, who traded with Egypt, obtained from the Caliph permission to construct in Jerusalem a church, a residence for themselves and a convent for the monks of the Order of the Benedictines of Monte Cassino.

As many Christian pilgrims flocked to Jerusalem, a hospital was also built. It was then that they adopted the cross of Amalfi and the name of Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem. By 1099, Gerard Tunc, a Frenchman, was master of the hospital and on his request Pope Pascal 11 recognised the community as a religious order in 1113.

Gerard Tunc became the first Grand Master of the Order and it is generally agreed that he introduced the white eight-pointed cross which was worn on the side of the heart on a black robe and a black cloak. According to the Rule, the Knights had to wear the cross on their robes in honour of God and the Holy Cross. It served as a reminder for them to follow the Rule, thus protecting themselves from the snares of the devil. The eight points of the cross symbolised the eight beatitudes and every new knight was reminded of these beatitudes during the ceremony of the profession of vows.

Valletta is dotted with small wonderful gardens, beautiful baroque architecture, museums and galleries. One of the best kept gardens is at The Upper Barracca. St Paul's Feast in Valletta

It is 1045 years since St Paul's visit to Malta, and the majority of Maltese still celebrate his feast which is traditionally held on the 10th of February to mark the day.

The apex of celebrations will be held at St. Paul’s Church in Valletta on Thursday at 0900CET. A further mass in English will be held at 1545CET. The procession with the statue of the saint will leave the church at 1730CET. It will pass through St Paul Street, Republic Street, St John's Street, Merchants Street, Melita Street and return to St Paul Street in order to re-renter the church. There will be two fireworks displays at the beginning and end of the procession, close to the Central Bank in Valletta.
The Church of St Paul Shipwrecked, has a sumptuous interior containing a fine altar-piece depicting the shipwreck by Paladini (1544-1614). As befits a building dedicated to one of Malta's patron saints, it is lavish, and it houses some venerated possessions. The plan is a Latin Cross, the dome elliptical and the floor tessellated. The wooden gilded statue of St Paul is by Melchiorre Gafa and is solemnly carried through the streets on February 10 every year, the day St Paul's shipwreck is commemorated.

Gafa's brother Lorenzo designed the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament in 1680 and de Favray painted the altarpiece. The ceiling frescoes depict St Paul's brief sojourn in Malta and were painted at the turn of the century, while the main altarpiece of St Paul and St Luke is from the late 16th century and by the Florentine, Filippo Paladini.

Donated to the church by Pope Pius VII in 1818 and most treasured of all, is part of the block upon which St Paul was said to have been beheaded, as well as what is believed to be part of his wristbone.

Early springtime on the Islands brings along carnival week, which takes on a traditional pattern; extravagantly coloured floats are perched on lorries ready for the procession day, children running around in fancy dress costumes and Malta’s main nightlife centre, Paceville, catching the late night carnival goers who pile into the clubs and bars, still wearing their outrageous outfits.

The heart of the action takes place in Valletta. Freedom Square in Valletta is the main place for watching the open-air comedic and baroque musical performances. The Maltese social set does their thing at the Grand Ball held at the Casino Maltese. Traditionally the centerpiece of the parade, the larger-than-life King Carnival float, a mad grinning figure with a jester's hat or crown. There are also various towns and villages across the Island that have their own version of festivities.

In Gozo, the main activities take place in It-Tokk, the main square in Gozo's capital Victoria. For a particular interpretation, visit Nadur, where carnival takes on a more sombre and mysterious mood.

February is Carnival time in Valletta, when the giant papier mache heads and grotesque figures come out of storage to be loaded on to floats and paraded through the streets. Not only Valletta but Floriana and the villages of Gozo, too, indulge in a Bacchanalian week of fun and frolics. Parades through the streets, bands, street theatre and entertainment make this one of Malta's major festivals, and one which has been around for a while. The first carnival was organised shortly after the Knights of St John came to the Island in 1535. Carnival dates are traditionally fixed at seven Sundays before Easter Sunday, which in turn is fixed at 14 days after the first new moon following March 21. Carols By Candlelight - Saturday December 22
From the present day capital Valletta one can go by bus or by boat to the other side of the Grand Harbour to the old headquarters of the Knights, Birgu (named Vittoriosa after the Great Siege). One of the oldest villages of Malta, Birgu is the perfect symbol of the rich history of the islands. This year the Birgu Local Council in association with the Malta Tourism Authority will be organizing an ‘Carols By Candlelight’, evening of Christmas entertainment at Birgu on Saturday, December 22. It is envisaged that this event will be organized on a large scale similar in line to past editions of Birgu By Candlelight, and it is expected to attract a large number of people from all over Malta and Gozo.

It is planned that on this evening the town will have its street lighting switched off so that these will be lit up instead by a variety of Christmas decorative lighting emanating from residences. This lighting will be provided in various ways, namely: Christmas trees, cribs, mangers with statues of Baby Jesus as well other decorations that are normally associated with Christmas festivities.

During this event numerous choral concerts will be held at the churches of Birgu. There will also be well known Maltese singers performing traditional as well as modern and popular Christmas songs in Victory Square. Here a warm and inviting ambience will also be created whereat one will also be able to buy traditional Maltese delicacies together with other food stuffs including mild wine, imbuljuta, roasted chestnuts and other traditional Christmas Maltese food.

The town’s main feast bands will be entertaining the crowds along the streets of Birgu while various soloists will be playing musical tunes in various locations.

The programme will start at 18.30 and will end at around midnight.

Valletta and Traditional Maltese cribs

Every year, during the weeks preceding Christmas, the Friends of the Crib hold an exhibition of works by their members. About one hundred cribs of various shapes and sizes made from different media like papier mache, cork etc, are put together to offer visitors, locals and tourists alike, the true story of Christmas, the birth of Baby Jesus.

This exhibition is just a street away from Maison La Vallette ( St Francis Hall, Melita Street Valletta.) It is open from 0900am - 1230pm and from 0400pm - 0700pm admission is free.

Oliver Reed - His Last Pub in Valletta

There can be few shrines to fallen artists that compare to Ollie's Last Pub. Oliver Reed, star of such films as Women in Love, The Three Musketeers, Oliver! and Castaway, died in 1999 after a drinking session in The Pub in Valetta's Archbishop Street. Admirers of the actor continue to flock from all over the world to pay their respects by sitting where Ollie sat on his last night on earth.

The Pub, which has been run by the Cremona family for the past 21 years, became Oliver Reed's favourite drinking spot when he was in Malta on holidays and during the making of his last film, Gladiator. On his last night, Ollie was said to have downed eight pints of lager, some rum and whisky, won an arm-wrestling contest and insisted on paying for the round. In honour of Reed, The Pub subtitled itself "Ollie's Last Pub" and now produces Oliver Reed mementos for admirers including candles, mugs, plates, T-shirts and bookmarks that display a picture of Reed and the legend of "Ollie's Last Pub".

Palazzo Falzon - Mdina

The Norman House is situated in Triq Villegaigon, Mdina, and originally was a much smaller construction. The position of the main entrance of the earliest part of the Norman House was different than it is today. The main door overlooked a street that probably existed where the staircase now stands.

This part of the house is considered to date back to the fourteenth century and originally was a one-storey building. Another floor was added in the fifteenth century. As was customary in this period, the ground floor was used as a store, or stables and kitchen whilst the upper floor was used as living quarters. The existing courtyard and staircase date back to the sixteenth century.

The earlier part of the house follows the basic plan of the typical Maltese house or palace of that period. In plan the house at ground floor was divided into three rooms, the central one being a hall, which led to a courtyard at the back. An external staircase leads from the courtyard to the rooms at the first floor level.

The original one storey building had a very plain façade typical of the fourteenth century palace façades. These bleak barrack like façades were in fashion at that time and conscious attempts were made to obtain this effect. However the original plain façade was later changed.

The style of the architecture applied on the façade, namely the pointed arch, is fifteenth century Gothic. Another typical feature used is the triangular corbels. Here they are laid out in a double row below the string cornice and a single row below the cornice.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, restoration works were carried out on the main front elevation of the Norman House. These interventions followed the principles of stylistic restoration in accordance to the school of thought of Viollet-Le-Duc. On the main façade a sham late medieval doorway with drip mouldings replaced a plain square-headed doorway and a narrow lancet window was widened in a segmental headed window. The central courtyard of the Norman House was also reconstructed to resemble examples of the late medieval buildings in Sicily.

The Bakery next door

Maltese cooking is a conglomeration of traditional recipes handed down, combined with the influences left behind of the many foreign dominations, as well as a nod to its neighbors, Sicily and North Africa.

Since there has always been a lack of firewood on the island, the people of Malta long ago developed a slow-method of cooking. Food was placed in earthenware dishes over a little portable stone stove which they would sit by, constantly fanning and feeding bits of thistle and brushwood. Although gas ovens are now available, this slow simmer method is still preferred resulting in the tender falling-off-the-bone meat with deeply infused flavors.

Another charming holdover from long ago can be seen on Sunday mornings. Housewives line up at the local bakery holding a large linen-covered casserole of meat with potatoes or rice and tomato sauce, with a metal identity tag tied on. For a few coins, the woman will leave the dish to be baked, join her family at church, then stop by after services to pick up their Sunday supper along with some freshly baked bread.

One popular spot where this service is still provided by The Bakery (shown above) situated next door to Maison La Vallette. Maltese take their bread seriously… to the tune of two deliveries daily to ensure peak freshness. The small rolls or larger loafs all begin using some of the mother dough-similar to our sourdough, and are formed in traditional shapes- one being the sign of the cross. The large woodburning ovens bake the bread briefly at a high heat to produce a very crusty ouside which gives way to a delicious tender center, perfect for sopping up stews.

This same bread is used to make the ubiquitous hobs biz-zejt (pronounced hops-bees-ATE); these specialty sandwiches have a few variations but basically are: a slice of the staff-of-life, rubbed hard with a clove of garlic, then with a cut piece of tomato, followed by a drizzle of olive oil, and a sprinkle of sea salt. (Other additions can include capers, olives, or tuna.)

Sunday Morning Market - flea market in Valletta

The Monti, as it is called locally, is a flea market held outside Valletta's city walls, in front of St. James Bastion & St. James Counter Guard at the side of the bus station. This is the largest market in Malta and and interesting to have a look around. Hawkers start putting up their wares early in the morning. Everything is cleared by noon so start early ! During the week there is a daily open air market in Merchant Street near the Palace.
Both outdoor markets sell the usual merchandise sold in markets world wide, seconds, antiques, books, fake designer labels. If you are looking for a bargain amongst the brick a brac get there early. Don't forget to polish up your bargaining skills.
There is also the old market - better known as Is-Suq. This is located behind the Grand Masters Palace. Here you will find fresh vegetables, fish, groceries, meat, herbs and spices. The building itself is worth a visit. It has a steel architecture quite rare locally.
